'About Ripon', a Community Jigsaw Project

This project was made possible thanks to a grant from the Ripon City Council.

The project’s aim is to involve as many people, places, organisations and establishments that make up the wonderful City of Ripon as we can, in creating a vibrant and unique jigsaw style display to be showcased around various venues in the city, that ‘paints a picture’ of our community and all the diverse ways that we work together, live alongside each other, help and support each other and forge links together, through good times and bad.

Below is a list of all the wonderful participants.

  • Dementia Forward
    Dementia Forward

We are a small charity providing support and information to people living with dementia across North Yorkshire, through our helpline, support advisors and Dementia Specialist Nurse. One of our aims is to ‘knit’ dementia support into the everyday lives of the local community, so that there is a higher level of understanding and people can continue to live well and do the things they enjoy for as long as possible. We do this through raising awareness, providing training and working in partnership with community groups and local businesses. We also provide wellbeing services, including cafes and singing groups, which (under normal circumstances) take place weekly and offer a safe, welcoming place for people to come and take part in activities and make friends. To find out more about us, visit our website or follow us on social media.  If you, or someone you know is affected by dementia, our Helpline is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. Please call 03300 578592.

    YMCA

Ripon YMCA is a local independent charity and housing association.

We provide Supported Housing to young people aged between 16 and 35 who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or are vulnerable.

Working in partnership we aim to support young people from dependence to independence, supporting them for up to 2 years to develop, learn living skills and engage in education, employment or training opportunities.

The support we provide is based around the needs, wants and aspirations of the young person. We use individual support plans to work alongside our tenants to build confidence and ensure progress.

Ultimately our goal is to move our tenants in to their own property, shared house, flat or council accommodation. A key challenge locally is the lack of affordable options for our young people, which can then lead to further difficulties.

Ancient abbey ruins and an awe-inspiring water garden at this World Heritage Site

For centuries people have been drawn to this inspiring place.

From humble beginnings the magnificent abbey was established by devout monks seeking a simpler existence. The atmospheric ruins that remain are a window into a way of life which shaped the medieval world.

When the socially ambitious John Aislabie inherited Studley Royal, he set about creating an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies, incorporating the romantic ruins into his design.

Green lawns stretch down to the riverside, a perfect spot for a picnic. Riverside paths lead to the deer park, home to Red, Fallow and Sika deer and ancient trees; limes, oaks, and sweet chestnuts.

One-of-a-kind, this special place is now recognised as a World Heritage Site.

Ripon Museum Trust is made up of three museums in the centre of Ripon: a Victorian workhouse, a Regency prison and a courthouse dating from 1830.  All of these institutions played a big part in the lives of Riponians of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and still do today.  Our 140 amazing volunteers are drawn from the town and surrounding villages.  They work on front of house, learning and outreach, curation, health & wellbeing and maintenance teams, keeping our doors open and welcoming visitors from all over the country and the world.  Our values are Fairness, Learning, Community, Teamwork and Ambition, our jig-saw designs reflect these; one side features our Prison & Police Museum, starring PC Thomas Sweeting who patrolled the streets of Ripon in the 1830s and 40s and also held the office of Bellman.  This imagining of Sweeting came from a project with primary school children looking at early policing and fairness.  The other side comes from the design of a banner of Ripon made by our Stitch, Knit & Natter group with Rural Arts.
